Top Five Causes of Motorcycle Accidents in Ohio

Motorcycle riding is a favorite pastime for many people in Ohio, but those fun rides can quickly turn deadly. The leading cause of motorcycle accidents in the state is negligent drivers who fail to see motorcyclists because of their small size. Still, all motorists are expected to drive in a safe and reasonable manner, which means drivers must remain vigilant and always watch for bikers. When they fail to act in a safe manner, they can cause a crash in a number of ways. The top five causes of motorcycle accidents in Ohio are listed below.

Left Turns

Left turns are perhaps the most common cause of motorcycle accidents in the state. Sometimes, a driver may not see a biker’s left turn signal when they approach them from behind, and then crash into them. Or, a driver may be stopped in an intersection, waiting to make a left turn. They check to ensure the way is clear of larger vehicles, but they do not see an oncoming motorcyclist. The driver then makes the turn and crashes into the biker.

Improper Lane Changes

Just as other motorists fail to see motorcyclists at intersections and when making a left turn, they also do not see them when they are changing lanes. Motorcycles are very small and so, they are easy to miss when drivers are checking their blind spots. Still, drivers are expected to properly check these areas any time they change lanes, and to ensure the way is clear before they do.

Speeding

Speeding is always dangerous, but when a driver is approaching a motorcycle, it is even riskier. Drivers already have difficulties spotting bikers on the road, and when they speed, it reduces the amount of distance they have to slow down and stop when approaching a motorcycle. This can result in rear-end collisions, T-bone accidents, and more, which will all cause serious injury to the biker.

Impaired Driving

Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is always extremely reckless behavior, and it causes bikers to sustain serious injuries. Impaired drivers have slower reaction times, poor judgment, and they generally take more risks. All of this puts motorcyclists at great risk.

Dangerous Road Conditions

Not all motorcycle accidents are caused by negligent drivers. Dangerous road conditions pose a hazard to everyone on the road, but the risk is particularly high for motorcyclists. Slippery roads can make a motorcycle even more unstable, and even small gravel or potholes can cause a biker to lose control of their bike, resulting in an accident. These accidents are serious even when only the biker is involved. When the biker falls into the path of oncoming vehicles during the crash, it becomes even more serious.
