Traumatic brain injury is thought to have played a role in the suicide of Ohio State University football player, Kosta Karageorge from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. According to several new reports, the Karageorge family believes that the suicide might be related to the multiple concussions the 22-year old defensive tackle and former wrestler had suffered.
If Karageorge’s suicide can be definitively linked to the residual damage from the multiple concussions he has been said to have suffered, his will be yet another in a series of tragic suicides among current and former football players. These suicides point to the residual effect brain injuries can have over a person’s lifetime. Whether you get injured on the football field or in a truck accident on an interstate highway, a brain injury can be devastating in the near and long term.
Brain injuries have serious repercussions in the lives of the people who suffer from them. The effects of a brain injury can range from as mild as a concussion to as severe as falling into a coma or death. The CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) reports that the effects of TBI can have an impact on thinking, sensation, language and emotion. A TBI can cause epilepsy or Parkinson’s disease and increase the risk for Alzheimer’s disease.
If you have been involved in any kind of accident that resulted in catastrophic injuries, which include a traumatic brain injury, you want to work with a personal injury attorney who has experience dealing with these complex cases. TBIs can alter your life in significant ways that can have an impact on a person’s ability to function and earn a living. Beyond fighting for compensation for the immediate medical bills, lost wages, and pain and suffering, a knowledgeable personal injury attorney will make sure that the responsible parties also compensate the injured person for future medical treatment, home care, potential lost earnings and reduced quality of life for the injured person.
