Perrysburg Truck Accident Attorney

Semi trucks pose a real hazard for other vehicles on the roadways. These large trucks are long and often carry huge loads of cargo. They are more dangerous than other types of vehicles because of their sheer size.

Rollovers are common for semi trucks. Many times this is caused by a failure to adjust speed accordingly. Falling asleep and other mental distractions are the second most common cause of rollovers. Oversteering and improper load weight and balancing were also causes.

While sometimes passenger vehicles drive carelessly around big rigs and cause accidents, truck drivers and the companies they work for are often at fault for crashes. Like every company, trucking companies want to avoid overspending, so they take shortcuts. They may avoid performing maintenance on their trucks or overload them with cargo. These actions can cause serious accidents. Sometimes they result in fatalities.

If you have been injured in a truck accident, you need to seek legal help right away. Time is of the essence. With the Perrysburg truck accident lawyers at Lafferty, Gallagher & Scott, LLC on your side, you have a very good chance of winning your case and receiving compensation to cover all your damages.

Hours of Service Rules

Many trucking companies also fail to follow hours of service rules. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has limitations on the amount of hours a truck driver can work consecutively to help prevent fatigue. Without these limits, many trucking companies would force drivers to work for as long as possible, causing drivers to fall asleep at the wheel and kill themselves and others.

For property-carrying drivers, there is an 11-hour limit after having at least 10 hours off duty. This means they can drive no more than 11 hours in one shift.  However, there is a 14-hour limit total. This means that if a driver starts his shift at 6 a.m., he cannot drive after 8 p.m. He is still limited to 11 hours of driving during this shift, so during the other three hours, he must be resting or performing other duties.

There is also a 60/70-hour limit. A driver may not drive after being on duty for 60 hours for seven consecutive days, or 70 hours for eight consecutive days. A new consecutive period starts after taking 34 hours off work.
