Steps to Take After a Slip and Fall Accident

July 23, 2019
By Lafferty Gallagher Scott

Although a slip and fall accident is often portrayed as humorous in slapstick comedy, in real life, this type of incident is not a laughing matter. Slip and fall accidents can lead to serious injuries that are occasionally difficult to detect at first. With both embarrassment and adrenaline running high, those who are injured in a slip and fall accident might not initially recognize or admit that they are hurt. For this reason, it is important to understand how to identify such an injury and to know what steps to take in the event of one.

Seek Immediate Medical Assistance

Even if you don’t think your injuries are all that serious, there are a few important reasons that you will want to seek medical attention directly after a slip and fall accident. First, frequently, injuries don’t always present signs right away. For example, a TBI (traumatic brain injury) might not show symptoms for days after the initial impact. A doctor will give a thorough exam to determine if there are any potential injuries incurred due to the accident.

Second, if you opt not to see a doctor right away and then start to develop symptoms even a few days after the accident, the insurance companies might attempt to claim that you were not that seriously hurt. They might try to say that if you were truly injured, you would not have waited to see the doctor. They also might go as far as to say that the injury is not even related to the claim to minimize the compensation they offer.

Document the Scene of the Accident

If you are safely able to, it can be beneficial to take photos of the area where you slipped. More likely than not, the company employees will clean the mess or clear the area directly after you leave. Take notes describing the area, and better yet, take detailed photos with your phone. Being able to provide photographic evidence of this area can be beneficial when establishing your claim.

Often, there will be bystanders who saw you slip and fall. These people might even note that they noticed the dangerous area and attempted to avoid it. If those who witnessed your slip and fall are willing to provide a statement explaining what they saw, this can also be helpful in supporting your claim.
